The second annual Drums of the Painted Mountain Pow Wow is set to occur at Southwest Virginia Community College on July 20 – 22. The event is a gathering of American Indian people aimed at preserving their rich culture while offering the opportunity to honor Mother Earth and those who came before them. The event is open to the public. Tickets can be purchased at the gate. Arvel Bird is set to be the headliner at the 2012 Pow Wow and brings a fusion of Native American and Celtic music to the stage. Bird, a violinist and Native American flutist, is known around the world for his dramatic connection between Celtic and Native American traditions, stirring up scenes that echo from North American memory. Dubbed “Lord of the Strings” by fans and music critics, his music evokes the soul of North American history and is thoroughly entertaining, but also enlightening and humanizing. In a language and experience that captures the hearts of all audiences, he’s emotional without being condescending, intellectual without being pretentious. One measure of any art form is when the medium is so mastered that it becomes transparent, allowing its message to be seen, heard and felt. Arvel Bird has achieved that mastery. The Drums of the Painted Mountain Pow Wow will open on Friday, July 20 at 8:00 a.m., with the Grand Entry beginning at 1:00 p.m. Arvel Bird will perform at 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Gates will close at 8:00 p.m. On Saturday, July 21, the event will open at 10:00 a.m. with the Grand Entry set for Noon. Bird will perform at both 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Gates will close at 8:00 p.m. The gates are set to open for the Pow Wow on Sunday, July 22, at noon. The Grand Entry takes place at 1:00 p.m., with Arvel Bird performing at 2:30 p.m. Admission at the gate is $7.00 for adults, $4.00 for children six years to 17 years of age, and children under six years of age are free. For Veterans with Veterans Feather there is no admission charge. This is a great opportunity to educate, foster understanding and encourage cooperation between the Native American community and others. Attendees are encouraged to participate when requested to experience their culture. Bring lawn chairs and enjoy the Drums of the Painted Mountain Pow Wow.
